![]() ![]() An example would be to have the program `conky` read the file and overlay it over your desktop. I know, you mentioned that you already are doing this, but you do have a lot of great options to get even more hacker-y with it. Get yourself `lolcat` as a `cat` replacement and you can be all hacker-y. In the text file case, you even have the option of typing `cat cheatsheet` and viewing right on that terminal of yours. Other possibilities are hosting a self edited wiki, or simply writing plain text files with the common arguments and commands you can use. Normal use case though? You spend just as much time learning to replace the original command as you would the correct command itself. ![]() This is one occasion where an alias is not a bad idea even though it is not covering some form of system breaking. This doesn't mean you cannot use aliases for personal use, as I do have one or two commands that use a particularly large number of command arguments, and yet I always use the exact same arguments. Aliases are best used for specific cases that prevent system breaks and faults, and using them yourself does not mean learning the commands at all, especially when you look up help for a problem and the instructions will be worded with the original commands rather than some simple alias you came up with. Also, learn to use `find`, `grep`, and `apropos` to round out your skills. Still, um is probably the best because it commits to muscle memory something that you would do anyways to look things up, even if most manpages go over your head (not a critique of your skills, just some darned manpages.). I do this, even though I still have tldr++, and of course good old google (er. Even if you have to look up the same cheat sheets again and again, just recognizing your own writing has a reinforcing aspect. Um is particularly useful because you are making your own cheat sheets, and the very act of writing down the important information tends to make that information stick better. ![]()
